going bear hunting next fall for sure, and im going to buy a 300 win mag to hunt with, im interested to find out how to tame it down so i can shoot it pretty good.. going to put a good recoil pad on it and use managed recoil ammo in it..just curious as to how much a really good muzzle break will help to tame the recoil..if anyone has any helpful information on this..please holler back at me

Nearly the same performance as the Mag , and in my opinion, a fairly pleasant rifle to shoot. Just a suggestion, for what its worth.

The break will cut a lot of recoil off of the gun. They do have their draw backs though. They make the gun VERY LOUD. When shooting at a range, as some folks do, the break is very unpleasant to be around i.e. for the shooter next to you.

The 300 win Mag is not as bad as you would think. Why do you want to calm it down? I would not use the managed recoil load if you are going to break it. Using the MR loads will effect your energy and will not do as much in the way of taming recoil as the break will. Use the bigger loads and break it.

Have to totally agree with Ghost . I would not consider a managed recoil load. I would think it would defeat the purpose of the larger, more powerful cartridge in the first place. A close hunting friend of mine who is also a thousand yard shooter uses the muzzle breaks to tame recoil on all his rifles, it seems to do a great job. His Rem 7mm mags, 25-06 and short mags are as pleasant to shoot as a light load 20 gauge shotgun. His range guns use weight along with the break to tame recoil. Hearing protection MUST be worn at all times, even when taking the shot while hunting. Serious damage to hearing will occur to the guy sitting beside the shooter on the first shot. I'm assuming the need to manage the recoil is due to a shoulder problem or surgery, good luck there.

Going to the MR loads defeats the purpose of this caliber. The 300 WM is designed to carry 1,000 - 1500 yards and maintain its effective terminal velocity. If recoil is an issue due to physical disabilities, like in my case, drop out of the magnum calibers. There are several calibers that will fit what you are looking for without having to run MR loads. A few that come to mind are the 260 Rem, 308 Win and under 600 yards both of these calibers will handle the game you are after. But I do recommend the 300 Win Mag for a lot of reason. 1. Extreme distances +1500 2. Maintains terminal velocity 3. Accuracy with the right components
There are several ways to drop the recoil. The first and foremost would be a break. I highly recommend a break, if you can afford it, on any gun. Why? It drops the recoil greatly, in the case of the 300 WM it would be comparable to a 243 or a 25-06. The break will improve accuracy, sometimes gaining .3 - .5 " MOA @ 100yrds. It is even possible to drop recoil so much that it is possible to see the vapor trail of the round down range through the rifles optics. The second thing to consider is the overall weight of the rifle. By adding weight to the rifle you will drop the felt recoil of the gun. Third, adding a Bi-Pod will help absorb felt recoil.
If I had to bet, by running a fully charged round with a quality break, weight around 10 - 12 lbs, Bi - Pod, I would say the felt recoil should be under 6 lbs. I would not be surprised to see it fall closer to 4.5 lbs of felt recoil.
If you are going to pump several rounds through this gun, for example target shooting, definitely get the break, add weight to the gun, and get a bi - pod. Shooting at game you are not going to notice the recoil, with or with out a break.
Be careful not to develop a flinch. It is easy to do with bigger calibers. One way to correct the flinch is to use what I call the "Money Method". How you do this is to have the gun rested either with a bi - pod, or sand bag. Purchase a quality Snap Cap. Now, with the gun on a sand bag or resting on the bi - pod, and you behind the gun, have a friend place a "Dime" on the end of the barrel. With the snap cap loaded, squeeze the trigger. With good fundamentals, the dime will never move. The objective to this method is two part. One, it helps the shooter develop good trigger control. Second, it reveals the "Flinch".
Next training method you can use is to Dope the gun. By this I mean, have a buddy load live rounds into the gun. But, have your buddy place the "Snap Cap" some where in the round count. The shooter must not know where the dummy round is placed in the round count. The objective is to reveal shooter error i.e. "The Flinch" and "Trigger Control".
A round that I would look at is the .300 RUM. The ballistics (energy and trajectory) exceed the .300 Wthrby. Breaking this gun, I would choose it over the .300 Win Mag. This round is smokin' down range. As far as recoil is concerned, it is comparable to what the .300 WM would be when equipped with a quality muzzle break. The .300 RUM will smoke the Win Mag.

Now there is a mountain of info for us! I like the training methods mentioned, will have to use those ideas in the future, thanks Ghost.
