Got up early this morning to go to the rifle range to try out some new deer loads. Decided on the way back home to stop off at one of the fields I hunt to look for some sharptails. Shortly into the walk, had three fly over me. Thought that would be it for the day. Figured everything had already pulled out of the field to feed. Dakota was pretty busy putting up pheasants, which was fun for her. That season doesn't open for three weeks yet. After quite a walk, I called Dakota in for some water. Reluctantly she came to me. Was a good time for me to get rid of some coffee also. So wouldn't ya know it. When we were standing there, one sharptail got up. Time I finally got my shotgun up, it was nearly out of range. I shot anyway. Well that sent up six more that were pretty darn close. So now I knew why she didn't want to come in. Always trust your dog. Only had one shell left in the 20 ga., but it was enough for a bird. Sharptails are really hard to find this year. It was a real treat to find some and to put one in the bag. Was 34 degrees out early this morning and no wind. Perfect for a walk about.
