I have obtained this information from the June issue of the Missouri Conservationist magazine. They have been gone for 150 years but on May 5th 2011, 34 Elk made their way to Missouri to make it their new home. They were captured in January by Missouri Conservation staff and biologists from Kentucky, the state of origin. They have underwent health testing and a waiting period since Jan before the transit to Missouri. The Elk had a 12 hour road trip aboard a Cattle trailer before arriving at the Peck Ranch Conservation Area where they will remain captive for a short time than released into Missouri's outdoors. Peck Ranch CA is a 23000 acre state conservation area and has been managed for 30 years to bring the area back to conditions suitable for Elk and other birds and animals . The Rocky Mountain Elk foundation is playing a big role in this restoration just as they have in Kentucky, Tennessee, Wisconsin and the Great Smoky Mts. The plan also includes provisions to deal with Elk that find their way onto land where they are not welcome. A link to photos and video of the Elk arriving, www.mdc.mo.gov/node/11377.

I also hope they do well and the herd size has increased by 5 new calves being born, we now have 39 head in Mo. The Elk were released from captivity June 1st. From what I have heard and read the local people are welcoming this Elk restoration project and that is what it will take to be successful
