Well this past saturday's Pa youth hunt was quite an experience. When we stepped out of the house in the morning the wind was whippin 25 to 30 mph. The rain stung my face it comin down so hard. The intitial plan was to go up to the top of the property to what we call the the long field. But ,for once,I thought ahead. I brought my blind along. I managed to talk my buddy into goin in a decent wind break area on eastern slope. It wouldn't help with the downpour but it wasnt as windy. Except for the occasional gusty swirl. When we gor in there I was soaked just settin up the blind. But once inside it was too bad. There was a break in the rain,so I gave out a series of loud assembly yealps. We swore we heard a gobble up over a high ridge on the north slope. I called again and it sounded like several gobblers thunder gobbling. I through some cutts at them and here they came. 6 longebeards and 4 hens. The toms were all struttin at over 40 yds,and little benny didnt feel comfortable. It was oh so tough for him to sit and watch these gobblers strut and gobble, right in front of him. Finaly one came into 35 yds,but that was as close as he got. He strutted and gobbled for nearly an hour or so. The birds finally all moved off into the open hardwoods ,eventually out of our sight. They didnt go far, because we could easily hear them gobble . After nearly 4 hrs a lone hen came from the direction ,the birds had gone. She walked right into the decoys. A few minutes later she left. And then i caught a white flash up in some pines and then a nice fan came up. It took more calling than i'm used to,just for him to commit. But eventually he came in. It was the same longbeard at 35 yds earlier. This time though he was edging closer. Benny had to switch over to my lap to see out of the blind. The tom was about to walk away and I hit him with some hard cuts on the slate and mouthcall at the same time. He wheeled around and at 34 yds he got popped. It was a terrible weather day for a youngster to endure. But the end result taught him a lesson. 8 yr old boy is hooked!
His older brother Jon also took a bird, whom some of you may remember.
