I almost never boresight any gun. I just start at 15 yards with cheap shells and get close enough in a couple shots to back up and dial in.

I shot Sunday and it took me two shots at 15 yards. I shot once and was low and left. I rested the gun on the bench and put the red dot (cross hairs in your case) on the bullseye and without moving the gun I moved the dot to the hole that the shot made. The second shot blew a hole through the bullseye.
I backed up to 40 yards and fired 1 of my hunting loads. I moved the dot just a little more to the left and the next shot was perfect. A total of 4 shots and I had my scope set. I fired a few more for pattern testing and they all held true.

I still have plenty of other things to blame.
