My buddy Russ and I went out chasing some roosters today. The weather had cleared up and the temps were up to 20 above. Getting around was still pretty hard though, as a lot of the roads to our hunting spots are still drifted in. If that wasn't tough enough, walking through the snow and the drifts was pretty darn hard, at least for me. The labs all worked pretty darn hard. With all the snow, pheasants are really visible now. With tha in mind, they can see us as much as we can see them. We saw hundreds of pheasants today. Dakota dug two nice roosters out of a snowdrift for me, but, well, I missed them. 870 is coming out of the gun locker for our next hunt Sunday. Anyways, the last place we went to was a small froze over stock dam in a pasture.
On the walk through the snow into it, we could see pheasants running out the back end and flying off. I was on one side and Russ on the other.
We turned the labs loose and they headed into the dam. As it turned out, there were still quite a few birds in there. They started getting up and flying to the north. Russ was to the north. He stood in one spot and emptied his gun, bringing down three nice roosters. He made a nice triple. Don't see that to often. That was enough. We walked back to the truck putting up a few hens and one sharptail. Headed home and cooked up some sausage along with some left over stuffing and pie, plus a few Millers. It was a very fun hunt today. No camera along though. Hope to remember it next time.
