Belle has been working on Back casting for two days now. The first day Sinatra81 and I were working her on trying to get her to back cast. It was quite evident that there was a lot of confusion for Belle on this command. My stop command is very similar to a back cast command, thus the confusion. We were scratching our heads on this one, because we had no idea how to get a positive result out of Belle. Well, Sinatra81 and I decided to call it an evening and I got busy doing what I do best, research. I researched back casting for what seemed to be hours. Would you believe I found only one article on this subject.
The way that they suggested to get a dog to back cast is like this. Take your dog and put them directly in front of you. Make sure that the dog is facing you and are at the dogs 6 o'clock position. Then take a step to the right and you should then be in a 5 o'clock position in relation to the dog. Now, take the bumper and throw it across the right side of the dog so that it is basically at eye level. When throwing the bumper, make sure it lands at the dogs 12 o'clock position. Then take both hands and place them together right below the sternum. Take a very deliberate step towards the dog at the same time making a pushing gesture with one of your hands, that is level with the sternum towards the dog, and extend your hand and arm completely out while saying "Back".
Now back to belle and my problem. I figured what do I have to loose. I was definitely going no where fast with what I was already doing. So I got Belle out and followed the instructions, step by step. Without fail Belle took the back cast three times, in a row, with no errors. WOOOHHOOOOOOO!!!! ;D ;D ;D
Granted this is only the second day and she will need to work on this a lot more. But, at least she understands what I am asking of her now and we can make improvements off of this now. I am so happy for her. Belle is doing better than I had ever expected. I did not expect her to take on casting till around 7 or 8 months. I will admit, I was really worried about the back casting. It is said, that back casting is one of the hardest commands to teach a dog.
