Man when i look back now. That first spring turkey season was pure luck. The spring prior,my buddy Greg asked me to accompany him for spring turkeys. I suggested we go to my families land. Not knowing if there were turkeys or not. And had no idea if anyone else was hunting them around the area. he ended up taking his first gobbler a jake. Had the bird behind me at a few feet gobbling. I was hooked! So the following spring. I had spent a couple weeks before the season of course calling and hearing birds. They were everywhere. Opening morning,I was not sure what time to go into the woods. It ended up being at flydown time. Just a little late. The day before I heard a couple gobbles in an area in the morning. So thats where i set up. Just in time to hear birds comin off the roost! I sat down quickly next to ,not a tree, but a pile of brush. I could only cluck and some what yelp on a 3 reeded mouthcall. The only call i had. The birds were at 100 yds and began gobbling nonstop. My legs were shaking uncontrollably. I tried to call and nothing came out. Finally i mustered a few nasty ,shaky yelps. And one answered,to my surprise. I called again ,he answered again. i think i over called a tad bit. This was so exciting,i was making him gobble! Then a bunch started answering. Across the hollow and in every direction. This went on for quite sometime. Somethin told me to stop calling and wait. After 15 minutes or so. I heard flapping wings getting louder, comin toward me across the hollow. Then a loud thud over the ridge ! i could hear him walking in the leaves then it stopped. And he let loose. Felt like the gobble moved the brim in my hat! He started walking again. But I couldn't ell which way he was comin in? My heart was pounding,my whole body shook. He walked up to my hard left ,struttin. He let out a gobble so loud i flinched. When i did the movement must have looked like a stump having a seizure. He putted,I swung my gun fast and missed him. He took to the air and shot number two dropped him out of the sky. A nice fat jake fell to the ground. And that was the start of this illness,i've had for 25 yrs. And every season i get just as excited as the first.I know it will never change either. As long as there are turkey;s ,i'll be hunting them. See if i can find a picture I know I have one somewhere.

It was a cold November morning.I have a somewhat narrow saddle I like to hunt. This place is wide open hardwoods atop a pretty big hill, almost like a plateau. On the east side it drops off pretty good and runs to the fields below. The western slope drops into an area of thick hemlocks and some open big woods, a large bowl more or less. Depending on where I place my stand,I can see from the south end to the north end. On the south end is a gradual up grade to a bench. This morning i was set up near the upgrade. In my tree I was just high enough to see the ridge above me,on the bench. A deer travel corridor you just don't find too often around here. At first light ,I had just got settled in ,when I hear something walking above me.All i could see was a huge bodied deer going through. A short time later I heard something coming up the east side of the saddle behind me. I rolled my head around and heres a big doe and yearling at 15 yds. The big doe saw me and ran. Her yearlig button buck ,had no idea what was goin on. He walked underneath my stand and began browsing. A short time later the doe came back walking almost eye level with me on the upgrade. She was walking broadside.I checked her back trail and saw no buck following. At 35 yds,i came to full draw and let er fly.. I double lunged her and she ran around and over the the western side of the saddle. A short time after that,i had some where around 7 or 8 bucks coming from different directions . They all stayed around 45 yds. It was like they were there in an instant and gone in an instant. I decided to take out the call, i gave a couple grunts and a few bleats. nothing at first. I then threw out a snort wheeze. Within seconds all hell broke loose. I have no idea how many deer came off the bench up behind me. Doe's runnin and bucks just scattering all over. I saw that big bodied deer from earlier and about fell out of the tree.It had been 3 years since i saw a buck in the 150's. This boy was big. Unfortunately he showed himself for a brief time and was gone. After he left i was pretty rattled. Then here comes a beautiful 9 pt runnin a doe within 20 yds of me. I couldn't stop him. After they vanished,I was sitting there formaybe another 10 minutes. When here comes two does scampering down off the bench.I could here grunts comin my way.Just as i got my bow ready here comes a buck with a decent spread! He walked right above where the doe I shot earlier came through. He stopped broadside at 38 yds.I double lunged him.He ran the same way the doe did. Except this time i heard the deer crash. I got my buddy on the radio and told him I needed help.It is nearly a mile from the bottom! When he got up there i told him i shot a doe and needed help trackin her. I had no idea where she went down. Continued

We followed the double blood trail. And then it forked off slightly. He was a bit confused.I honestly wasn't playing a prank on him.I just never told him about the buck.I heard him crash and didn't hear the doe. After he looked at me.I said oh,I shot a buck too! Well anyway we followed the blood and the two deer were less than 15 yds from eachother. A 12 pt and a big doe. It took us almost two hrs to get them off the hill.
