Well it is nearly March and another spring turkey season is just around the corner. With the longer days it is time to start looking for birds. They should be flocking up in mixed groups and becoming vocal in the mornings and evenings . Along with fighting off the roost. I need to check the farms first and see what they are holding. Not too worried about the woodland properties yet. They should be where the food is more abundant.

Well finally the doldrums of winter have broken! The weather has been very nice here. the snow has mostly melted off and the fields are opened up. For the past few days i have been hearing and seeing some good flocks, with some nice tom's in them. I want to try and keep tabs on 3 longbeards in particular. One is or would be an awesome bird to take. Looks like a 4 or 5 yr old.Dagger's for spurs.Just a trophy bird all around. it has been several yrs, since i actually zeroed in on one bird. So it ought to be fun trying to take him. This morning they were fighting and strutting . Things are beginning to heat up,so the larger flocks should start breaking up. Spreading the birds out. Looks like it should be a good year.

The birds have been gobbling pretty good. I went and checked out the usual stompin grounds. Two of the spots I didn't hit til well after flydown. So there wasn't a whole lot of gobbling. The family property has ,what sounds like ,more birds than last year. Had birds all up through the hollow on both side of the road.I'm not sure the total but sounded very promising. Being this late in March, they should be in the area come season time. Most of our 4 wheeler trails had birds using them for strut zones.Found quite a few gobbler tracks on them. The 3 farms had a lot of birds on them. The winter flocks are breaking up. Saw 30 on the creekside, some nice longbeards in that group. Walked over to the other side and saw two flocks, one in the grain field and one in the chopped corn field. Each flock had some nice longbeards in them. But the flock in the chopped corn field had a pig with them. Looks like they are probably roosting on the same ridge as last year at this time. So they shouldn't go far come season time. Like to keep tabs on that big boy. but he'll have a lot of hens,by the looks of it. Goin out tomorrow close to home and check the state land.

The past week of scouting has been very exciting. All the loud mouth jakes from last year seem to be all loud mouth two year olds this year. Some have grown some pretty long ropes. I hope this is an indication of how the season is gonna go. I thought by now quite a few of them would have moved off for parts unknown. But it seems there is several flocks of hens scattered around. The hollow is like an echo chamber. Couldn't really count how many but a guess would be about 15 or so?? Looks like a fighting purr maybe used some during the season if they stay. They are all basically in the same general vicinity, but don't tolerate eachother at all. One group got too close to what sounded like two longbeards and a fight broke out for close to 10 minutes. I had them run by me at 70 yds ,gobbling at each other. See what happens in the next few weeks.

Pretty darn cold this morning.Went up on the state ground near home. The birds were carryin on pretty good. Some hard core gobblin.the hens were really squawkin. Sounded like they headed down to the cornfields in the flats after flydown. Wasn't exactly dressed for the occasion. Got cold once the birds wlaked over the hill and couldn't hear them anymore. on my way out heard birds over on the back forty.May have to take a walk back in there.Usually good for one longbeard.

With most of the turkeys getting pretty established on all the properties. Kind of getting an idea where they should be come the youth hunt and the opener. My uncle has again disturbed the birds on the families land. When he wasn't riding the four wheeler up through the hardwoods. The birds were roosting in there about every morning. Now they have thinned out some and moved to the areas on the hill where he doesn't ride. The logging roads were full of gobbler tracks. Now they aren't using them much. I again will have to come up with a different plan of attack I guess. As far as the three farms and the other holdings. They look and sound as promising as usual. Should be able to pluck a few if not more with some of the kids and buddies. I'm kind of glad the gobbling has somewhat slowed down in some of the areas. To me not a bad thing at all!

Was a little breezy and cool this morning. But it didn't bother the birds at all. They were vocal which was a good thing. If the two gobblers stay on the pattern for one more week. They should be in a good position for a blast from the daughters 20 gauge.I'll have to get a back up bird or two just in case.

Out scouting this morning only heard a dozen or so gobbles the wind was starting to kick up. Did spot the big bird from Sundays outing. He appears to be roosting way down in a bowl. He gobbled 3 times went silent on his way to the field. Then gobbled a few more times once he reached it. Still can't believe his size. He followed a tractor path for about 50 yds, then cut through a narrow hedgerow. His hens never showed until he walked nearly 200 yds. They came out of a totally different patch of woods. Today he had 3 of them. After 15 minutes or so they started heading my way. Then cut down into a small greened up flat spot, where he gobbled 2 more times. Then just strutted around the 1/2 acre spot. While watching him a couple of his buddies showed up .Looked like one of the jakes and a longbeard he was with on sunday. Won't hunt them til during the week.
