I've shed hunted 30 of the 40 years I've deer hunted. And find some each year. The use'll way.Bedding areas food scorces, trails inbetween etc.But untill this year when I had someone point it out to me.I just thought everyone dose this. It's acounted for 100's of sheds through the years. And I'm sure you all read about antler traps.Which work great and I do the same but I use whats already there.Instead of putting them out.
Frist off I hunt mainly farms which all have american wire fences.I like the old ones that are mashed down or bent back.New ones but up and the old ones left there.I'll pull up the mashed down peices[best] to there off the ground 6 0r 8 inchs.Springle shelled corn all anound under it.Take eared corn tie a peice of string aroung the middle tie it up under the fence.
Where bucks have a hard time getting to the corn hitting there antlers against the fence in the process.Where the fence is up and good I'll tie the corn right up tight to the fence.
Same way with brier thickets tie it right to the briers anywhere bucks will hit their antlers against trying to get to the corn.I'll have a few of these places set up on each farm and back pack my corn in while I'm hunting the regure areas.Bigger the antlers the quicker they lose them.
Places on farms where I need to or want to I'll take a peice of american wire fence say 6 feet and nail it up off the ground between trees and bait.Leave the ends open where bucks can get their head[ antlers ] up under the wire to feed. Also those old sink holes filed with rolls of wire and also great places.Just bait up every time you go by.
All you have to do is keep your spots baited through the late season and pick up your antlers.Your head this way shed hunting anyway. It's a lot of work to really do.I keep mine baited weeky and do it all FEB MARCH here in WV.By then my thoughts have all turned to turkeys.Which is my second of many obsecions. If you really do this you'll be really surprised.
