Last evening my wife and I attended a Whitetails Unlimited banquet where there was a large mixed crowd. Terry Drury was there and he gave a brief speech and asked as well as answered some questions.
One I found interesting and would have guessed wrong, was the percentage of youth versus the older generation that were involved this past season hunting Whitetails. Terry asked by show of hands how many 70 year olds had taken a deer in 09, there were none. Next how many over 60 years old had taken a deer and no hands went up. In my over 50 group, there were 5 hands that went up, my wife and I among those. He then dropped the age group question to 12 years old and younger that had killed a deer in 2009, there were 9 young hunters that raised their hands. As Terry said, we are evidently doing a good job at getting our youth involved in North Mo. The crowd numbered about 300 and you could see it had a very diverse age group with a large number of young people.

Thats been my goal each year. How many kids can I get involved in hunting. I do believe that the future of hunting depends on it. I sometimes wonder what the stats are? Meaning the anti's numbers vs the hunters/outdoorsmen numbers.I notice we gain some and lose some across the country. I also think in this day and age promoting to those that would listen, the positives of hunting. And the negatives of not hunting. How children would gain more respect for firearms. And their capabilities when used on a living creature. Glad to hear the banquet had a positive for our future. Thanks for sharing Grizz.
