I have a270 win but was wondering if the 30-06 is a better all around gun. The main thing I hunt right now is deer but wont to go after elk next year & I don't Know what one would be the better gun? Thanks for the help.

I know shot placement is the most important part. I think I asked the wrong question what I was wanting to know is between the to of them witch one has the best selection of factory ammo available? If you could only have one gun witch one would you go with? thank you for the help

I love my Mossberg atr 100 .270. Wouldn't take $1000 for it. Hogs, Deer, etc... Plenty of ammo to choose from also. just my two cents though

Nice to see you back again buddy. As for your question. Yes the .270 will certainly do the job on an elk. Between the the .270 and the 30-06 I would have to say that the 30-06 would have the advantage of a better selection of factory ammo, also you would be able to shoot a heavier bullet if needed. Myself, I would choose the 06. Hopes this helps out some.

30 - 06 has a wider range of ammunition.
The .270 was actually designed from the 30 - 06. The .270 is a necked down version of the 30 - 06 (.277 or 7.04 mm).

30-06 leaves a larger wound channel /velosity is the same /ballistic coefficient is less/but it will shoot a heaver slug/ over all for elk i believe it is slightly better/but 270 is close enough to be ok for elk/ for longer ranges you may want to make a bigger jump to one of the 300s/with 150 grain 270-30-06 are the same
