Got to shoot one the other day in .243 Caliber. I would say this rifle is probably the best value going on any centerfire rifle on the market today. And it shoots great.

Looked at the website and this is a slick lookin gun. What kind of groups did you get and how far were you shooting? Did it have the Pro_Fire adjustable trigger and how did it feel and how did it break? Do you like the trigger? Also, how does the cocking indicator work and do you think it is a good idea as far as safety is concerned versus something like the older Rem 700 action? Looked at the website and seen that it had a 22in barrel only. This will make it great for hunting brush and tighter spots, this with the light weight, should make it a great all day gun. Hopefully Marlin will add longer barrel lengths to the XL7 line. From reading the stats the gun seems to have great potential to be a tack driver with the Pro_Fire adjustable trigger and the 1 & 10 twist. I think if Marlin were to add longer barrel options this gun could be very interesting to see what it is capable of. Since this is a new line added to Marlins already great guns, Marlin is probably going to wait and see how the gun is accepted by the public before adding more options, i.e. stock types, calibers, longer barrels, ect. This is definately a gun to keep your eye on for a possible purchase. If the public likes and accepts the gun the $350 price tag won't hang around long.
KT, how did the bolt feel? Was there any slop? If so, how much?
I really like that Marlin choose to go with a step crown. I know its a personal choice but I prefer it over a 11 degree crown, although the 11 degree is considered to be the true target crown. I feel there is less of a chance for the owner to damage the crown when it is a step crown and as far as accuracy is conserned, the crown is very important. The bolt head being pinned to the main body of the bolt is a good idea for accuracy. The only thing that I can find wrong with the gun is the composite trigger guard. I still am a little old fashioned and prefer the metal trigger guards.

Hey Soggy, I do need to make a correction here. This model was an XS7 which is the short action version of XL7. My mistake here, but it is still the same rifle other than being a short action. This was a new out of the box rifle and its first time to the range. It was not shot under the best of conditions, temp. at 80 degrees with cross winds at 10-15 MPH. Ammo that was being used was Federal 100 gr. Powershok. The fit and finish on this rifle seems to be pretty good plus its pillar bedded to boot. The pro-fire trigger seems to break clean and crisp. Did not do any adjustments on it as it was not my rifle. Personally I would have taken it down another lb. to about 2.5 pounds. The safety would take a little getting used to if one would want to utilize the cocking indicator as designed. Its not something I paid much attention to. The rifle feels very good in your hands and the weight is not to bad. After sighting it at 25 yards, groups were shot at 100 yards. Groups ran about 1.25" at one hundred yards. Actually not very bad at all, considering the temps. the winds, the ammo and the fact that it was a brand new rifle. With decent handloads, I'm pretty confident this rifle would shoot under .75" groups very easily. I don't believe the owners will be reloading for it though. They purchased this rifle on sale for $280.00. What a sweet deal for anyone that wants a nice inexpensive new hunting rifle. I wouldn't have any problem buying one of these if I needed a new rifle. With the addition of XS7 series. Quite a few more calibers have been added to the lineup. My buddy Jared has a new Savage .243 that he purchased a month or so ago. Will be fun to shoot this rifle and compare it to the Marlin. The weather has been terrible everytime we tried to go out and shoot it. Not looking any better in the near future either. Anyways, the Marlin is a sweet little rifle.
