PETA’s “Mermaids” Protest Vets in Seattle
7/22/09
Veterinarians attending a national convention in Seattle got quite a surprise when PETA unveiled one of their “fishier” stunts complete with half naked mermaids and mermen.
The American Veterinary Association (AVMA) had scheduled a salmon-tossing presentation at the famous Pike Place Market during its Seattle based conference in mid-July. One of the popular market attractions involves throwing fresh caught and newly purchased salmon the length of the seafood display as part of the sale and packaging process.
Of course, PETA, never an organization to allow a protest opportunity to go to waste, called on the AVMA to cancel the event or use “rubber fish.” The AVMA went ahead and used the real thing prompting PETA to deploy “mermaid/merman” topless protestors complete with painted skin. The protestors lied down outside the convention center where the AVMA was meeting.
An AVMA spokesperson was quoted in the media saying, “"While we respect the right of the animal rights groups to protest, we felt okay about going forward with the market's fish toss because it's an educational and motivational exercise."
