Gun Permits Continue to Surge Since Obama ElectionSee More News 7/8/2009 Gun permits continue to skyrocket in Kentucky and southern Indiana since President Obama has taken office.
The Courier-Journal reports that while the White House issued a statement last month addressing fears of diminishing Second Amendment rights, the rush for permits, guns and ammunition doesn’t seem to be slowing down.
"The president believes the Second Amendment creates an individual right, and he respects the constitutional rights of Americans to bear arms," said the statement, which adds that the administration "is committed to protecting the rights of hunters and other law-abiding Americans to purchase, own, transport and use guns while stopping firearms traffickers and keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, terrorists and others prohibited from owning them."
Kentucky State Police issued just over 16,000 permits last year. The latest count in June revealed 15,531 permits had already been issued this year.
Things are looking similar in Indiana. The state issued 42,403 new handgun permits in the first four months of this year, up from 29,029 during the same period in 2008.
Indiana State Police were forced to hire five temporary workers to keep up with the demand for gun permits, Lt. Jerry Berkey, commander of the Indiana State Police Firearms Section, stated.
