How many of you like to take trips out of state for deer hunting? Last year two friends and myself took a trip to the Northwoods of WI for a rifle deer hunt.First days hunt was up at 4 am get all the gear togather and headed for the stands. You know 11 hrs on stand is a long time.Longer when you don't even catch a glimpse of a deer.So i was back to the cabin eat supper and hit the sack.Day two was 20 degrees and very windy.I opted to sit in a pop up ground blind i took along.Instead of sitting up in the wind that morning.By 1 pm wind had died down some and i moved into the stand for the afternoon.Again the three of us didn't see a thing. And not that we are hunting togather. We all had our own areas we choose to hunt. The third an last day, morning was unsuccessful and i choose to move the stand into a area that had been clear cut somewhat. As luck would have it the last 20 minutes of light i caught movement in the cut's.A faint white flash of a tail flickering.A doe a med.sized doe so I eased the 308 up to my shoulder, found the front quarter in the duplex crosshairs and sent the 168 gr bullet to it's target. It immediately put her down

No joke..MEDIUM sized!?
However I will tell you that on my lease we have some HUGE doe...I mean..gigantic..last year I shot one that looked like a darn buck (early morning) and when I waited for a full light for a shot..saw HER..I was amazed at her body size. This year I we have soybeans out..first time ever...I'm looking forward to seeing the results.

Yes that really is a med sized doe for here.It was 167 lbs.I earned every bit of meat on her.I drug her 1/4 out of the timber(in wi it's more like bush) by my self before i gutted it.So i didn't fill the cavity with dirt.Had a 5 hr ride home that night after deboning it.But i was smiling all the way home.We are planning on going up again this year and maybe a trip to Indiana,if i don't draw a bear tag this year for MI.

Why would you ever want to leave Ill. ;D Iff you are sick of that property, I can come out and keep an eye on it for ya! ;)That is a great lookin' doe. Wow... 167 lbs. The PA/MD does that we kill are considered huge if they dress out 120!!!

That looks like a fine deer, and well taken. Good for you!
Average southern Illinois does (at least 1.5 yrs) that we kill are usually 100-115 lbs dressed, hanging from a scale. If they get up around 130-150, you're talking monster stuff for our area.
Many people (not pointing fingers) cannot be trusted to tell a deer's weight by looking at it, or even hefting it. A good butcher's scale would really shock many folks that claim to have killed 150 lb does.
I think a big problem is that a doe doesn't carry the body mass that a buck does, though she spreads out to nearly the same size of a male deer.
Any deer legally taken is a trophy, and most taste really good, too.

I also meant to ask, did she taste funny, being from a different area?
I have heard that if you kill a deer too far north (out of farming country) that they taste like turpentine.
Sadly, many of my deer taste like beef, having grown up eating corn and beans most of their lives.

WinMag I guess I missed the picture, I have seen pictures of some super doe's, there was one taken on Tensas Refuge a couple of year's ago that went over 220 lb's.......A HELLLLLLLLLL of a doe for North Louisiana. We had the pleasure of deer hunting in Texas last fall and MommaLH and I are going to Idaho this fall, and I can't wait. After buying our license to Turkey hunt this spring in Ky all we would be out is another 20 bucks a peice so we may try Eastern Ky this fall also.
