My curiosity got the best of me after seeing all of his beautiful pics and I ordered up a call from Alan Sentell. Just got it today and let me tell ya... I'm sure glad I did! He sent me out a Crystal over Slate in Cherry with a striker made from Cherry (the head) and the shaft in Bocote. So far I really like this call for many reasons... it's real pretty, it fits nicely in the hand, put together very well but mainly because of it's diversity in being able to use both sides. The Crystal is sharp sounding with plenty of rasp and volume... the perfect combination! The slate is just awesome as well! Man, you should hear that slate purr!! Gotta whole lot of turkey in it... you'd think there was a real hen in the house! I'll post pics soon. Great call Alan! Two big thumbs up from me bud! Here's one of the pics I promised... got a few more and will post as soon as they are uploaded.

Hey Alan, by the way.. what do you think about that Osage? I hear nothing but good things about it but I've never had one, I want to get YOUR personal opinion.

Jason, Its all in what you want out of the call, I have made this style call with a lot of diffrent woods over the years, Osage will make a very loud high pitched call that will make your ears hurt the break is very sharp if I lived and hunted open ground it would be my wood of choice. Your calls is a mid way call that can get loud but is easy to tone down and soft call, my personal call is this same style but in red cedar its a more mellow call and fits in well where people have almost called the birds to death on public land. I can do the soft unconcerned hen talk that a longbeard cant stand, he is trying to get her to come running and this call kinda says I might but you will have to come over here. I play both sides one behind the other the crystal a little excited and the slate like an old hen telling the young hen to calm down and be a lady. It is deadly worked that way. Now that I have given away my secret calling style I sure hope none of you guys hunt in my area. alan

Alan I like the look of your callers. The design that you come up with is great. It really looks like it would fit great in your hand.I like double sided calls. My first pot style caller was a Perfection glass over slate. With those custom matched strikers you have with the callers I bet they sound has good as they look.I got one question about your Red Cedar Wood you use.Is that the same cedar from a regular cedar tree we see growing everwhere?I will have to get me one of your Red Cedar pot style callers with the cyrstal and slate sounding surfaces. What kind of wood do you make the two strikers out of that would match the Red Cedar caller?

NC, The best striker for crystal in my opinion is bocote and next would be bulbinga a member of the rosewood faimly. The red cedar is just what you see growing all over the south except it has to be old timber with no knots and thats hard to find with the tight grain and quarter sawn, But theres no better call in my vest, if I am going to use a round call its what I reach for. alan

One more thing. If I order one of them in Red Cedar which strikers would I get.Would it be the two you talked about. The two that match the caller best I guess.Right.

Well I got one more question. The stikers. Are they turned from one piece of wood like on your newmoon site or are they made from two types of wood like the caller you have shown here in this thread.I like both.Which is the best.I guess if I got the two wood type striker the end would match the let's say Red Cedar pot caller and the shaft would be Bocote.tell me all about it.I will try to call you tommorrow about.I think I have way too many question to talk about on here.Like I said I like your round callers. The name Newmooncaller fits. Thanks Mike

NC, I will try to answer your questions, I build a one sided slate, crystal, iodized aluminum along with the two sider, I sell one striker matched to each call any additional striker is extra, I can make the strikers both ways but would rather make the hand turned striker head and dowel because it's easyer to ballance that way, get fewer culls that way. give me a call and I will try to explan better. alan

Since I'm a HUGE Crystal fan, I have been using a Pecan striker I've got on my Crystals and in my opion...just my opinion... I think it's the best sounding combo with the Crystals. Bocote is definitely next in line though and Maple is also another fave of mine. Now, when it comes to slate, Bocote is my fave striker.
