I like to give Christmas presents that surprise the receiver and that are not easy to find or buy ,so, I decided to make this european mount for my son-in-law as one of his presents this year. I'm not a Taxidermist but enjoy working with wood so I went to the barn and got a hard maple board that had been air drying for 10 years and started to work. I first got the skull ready which took me about 2 hours ,then started on the wood.I planed the board in my 13 inch planer, traced around the skull for a shape, enlarged it by 1 inch and cut out this shape.I sanded the edges with my table top belt/disc sander, cut the leg piece with a 12 in miter saw, then used a round over bit in my plunge router to round the edges ,predrilled holes and counter sunk these holes for the screws to fit in flush and out of sight.I filled the brain cavity in the skull with autobody filler and began putting it together. This is the first one I've done but if you have about 2 grand worth of tools and 6 hours it's not bad at all.It even made me feel as though Taxidermists are under paid! This is my son-in-laws first buck as he only started hunting last year so I'm hoping he likes it.

Hey Grizz! That's one heck of a job you did there bud! I can't imaging the amount of work and dedication that took to get it "just right"! Nicely done bro! I can tell you really have a passion for this sport we all take to the field in! You're just like me when it comes to turkey hunting1 He sure is going to be happy with that.... I sure would! Awsome... just awsome! And oh yeah... that's a cool lookin website there on the computer! lol

Thank you very much Gobfather for the compliments! I found the hardest part to making this , was getting the screws in place tightly enough so there was no gap in the pieces where they joined.I had 2 screws twist off and I had to take it apart each time and remove them even though I had predrilled the holes. This was the second time I have worked with hard maple and may be my last , it almost became firewood on two occasions.
I would have to thank ( or blame ) my father for my passion for hunting , he started me hunting with him at the age of three and we hit it hard together until he passed away in '88 but we still have his farm and 50 acres of it is set aside just for hunting , raising catfish ,food plots and hardwood timber. This farm and my addiction to hunting kept me out of trouble all my life , and I've used it to start many other young people on the same path. I'm now getting ready to work with grandchildren as they are getting old enough . And by the way , I want to congratulate you Gobfather , for a great website , I truly enjoy it , awesome job back at you!

Grizz1, man that is an awsome gift idea, and beautiful mount. Your son-in-law should love that I would, and it would have twice the meaning to me being my first buck and the fact that your did all that hard work in it would be a special memory

Thanks fellas for the continued compliments and yes my son-in-law loved the mount. If you like the look of the european mount, this works great to display as I did in the pic or you can cut the upright shorter, rotate it a half turn and mount it on the wall. Most of my inventions don't work as well as this one did but when I get my woodworking shop done I plan to mount several more of my antlers this way.
