My fascination with taxidermy is strongly connected to my love of hunting and trapping. When I shot this buttonbuck on the last day of the late season, here in PA a few years back, it meant a lot to me. He was the first deer I had taken with a flintlock. Thinking to myself while dressing him out I thought, I'm going to give taxidermy a try. I still have him today, but he hangs with the bigger boys. lol
My Dad had called me one evening, during bow season and told me that he had hit a nice buck. He knew I had been wanting to work on another deer so he offered to let me practice on him. When he found the buck, I could tell he was a little hesitant to turn it over to me to mount. Up to that point, it was the nicest PA deer he had ever got. We talked it over and planned on a shoulder mount for the wall. Well...I wanted to do more, something extra special for such a nice buck. So with the help of my hunting, trapping and taxidermy partner Larry AND after many nights at work drawing up plans and writing down ideas, this is what my Dad ended up with. Surprise, it's a pedestal...instead.
This deer is on a piece of rebar that is through the form and runs down into the rocks. He will turn 360 degrees. I wasn't sure which corner of the house my Dad would put him, so I kept being able to move him around, in mind.
On this backside, looking back, I would have just done one hoof print, instead of two. Perhaps, in a darker color to match the base more. These are the things you learn to do different, next time.
Being a surprise, I wanted to keep the base very simple to keep clean and plain. My Dad has laid some sheds, including a shed from this buck on the base around the rocks that hold the deer in place. It looks perfect. There is a hidden door on this cabinet, right at that deer track.
In 2005, I headed out for our first day of rifle season. I sat alone and planned on hunting the whole day. It was pushing noon, finally I had seen some does coming my way and decided to hold off for a buck. Waiting paid off, where there are girls, there are going to be boys. I dropped this buck, in his tracks at about 70 yards. He is my best PA buck, to date.
Back to my Dad, once again. Just when I thought he wouldn't ever shoot a nicer PA buck. What does he do, the very next year? Shoots a nicer one. Well, along with his buck, his girlfriend Dawn also got her first buck. Here is how they turned out.
His buck:
Her buck:
Can't even tell how proud I am, can ya? Being able to do something special for my Dad, means everything to me. He taught me how to hunt and by doing that, I'll forever have something meaningful. Nothing in my life has paid me back more happiness than hunting and trapping.
Hope you like them! Thanks for looking.
