While reading through some of "The Longhunter's Sketchbook" I ran across a picture of a "hunting " or "possibles bag" from the 18th Century. It was made from a wood duck. The hunting bag was covered with the skin of a male wood duck. They cut horizontally ahead of the wings, removed the carcass and sewed the head section back on such that the head lay over the back closing up the interior. Legs and wings are still attached. Then they covered the shoulder straps with mallard necks. This was quite unique. All the colorful feathers are now showing as the bag hangs from the shoulder.
My question is how does one keep the skin soft and pliable like leather? Most mounts I have seen seems the skin gets hard or dried-up.
I thought this would be a nice novelty bag since I currently do all my waterfowl hunting with a flintlock.
