I have a red fox to mount and i am just wondering for suggestions on some habitat to mount it with. Im not sure to do it in a snow scene, or like just plain on a log, or in a autum scene. Any suggestions will be great. The pose is of it just walking with its head semil down.
thanks H4E

H4E Do you get Breakthrough? On the cover this month is a beautiful red fox in a snow scene. Breakthrough also has a 'Habitat and Exhibit Manual' that shows how to create different bases. This site shows how to make a very simple rock ledge: www.hidetanning.net/TaxidermyHabitatShelves.htmlThe longer you do taxidermy the more you'll start to think like a taxidermist when you're doing everyday things....you'll see a creek or a row of cut corn and think "gee, my mounted pheasant/goose/fox would look great in that setting". Or when you're out hunting you'll pick up driftwood, moss, mushrooms etc. for making habitat bases. If you're like me you'll start to have a camera with you at all times to take pics of different habitats and then try to recreate them for your bases. No matter what type of scene you decide on snow, forest floor, rock ledge, try to keep the base and the habitat small....you don't want the base to 'overpower' the mount or have the mount 'hidden' by the habitat. The mount should be the 'center of attention' with the habitat complimenting it. It's your choice as to what base/habitat to use for your fox....what feels right to you?? If you finish the base and don't like it you can always set that one aside for another mount and start a new one!

Excellent link - huntress! Hadn't seen that one.
H4E - the Breakthrough habitat book is pretty good, too! Look for a used one or at the library.

thanks huntress thats some good info, im thinking of like just a base to put it on but i dont know what would look better, a snow scene would show more of the fox, but the autum or other scene would almost overpower the red color of the fox. THanks for the website i printed it out so i can keep learning it and hopefull try it someday.
