It was freeze dried just for the mount. Freeze-drying is the only way to go if you want those little hairs and definition on the head. Huntress? Anything to add? - Sloppy yes slopmeister all of my buds turkey mounts except 1{shot up 2 bad] have freeze dried heads but yours by far is the best ive seen.a big to yer taxidermist

Yup, I agree if you're going to get a turkey mounted, using the real head is the ONLY way to go!
Sloppy, I don't know if your taxidermist did that head or if he sent it out but it's a very good paint job. I mount turkeys, but in order to make them look their best I send all my heads out to Cally Morris at Hazel Creek. Those guys are the masters and I know if I want to do a good job for my customers I won't even attempt to do the head myself.

But Sloppy just paid the bill ($500 for a full-body). The taxidermist (Gene Robinson) is very particular about his mounts. HE told Sloppy that he has a small, fine-toothed comb that he "teases" each of those head hairs up with. Talk about tedious! You're the best Hoos'! Keep on huntin'! - Sloppy ya just gave me an idea slopster.since yer taxidermist uses a fine tooth comb to tease every hair i may try to get my 14 y/o daughter a job as a taxidermist assisstant as she spends 45 minutes every morning teasing every hair on her precious blonde head.she,s been wanting a job and this would be perfect for her ;D

Well....I gave Gene Robinson the Racks & Spurs Club website address so...hopefully he'll read your admiration of his work on this site (of couse, Sloppy will tell him after he talks to him next time ). Gene does send the heads out for freeze-drying but the painting is done in-house. Sloppy can ask him some more specific questions in the coming weeks. - Sloppy WOW if he's doing the painting himself then he must be very skilled with the air brush. The only thing I do with my air brush is cuss at it.

Huntress, you need to do more fish!
Man do they really teach you how to use your air-brush (unless you use thos cheater templates that are available now!)

I've done hundreds of fish and never tried the templates. I think my problem is the type of paint I use....water based. I don't care to breath in the fumes from the lacquer paints but they come out of the gun MUCH nicer than the hydro mist. My solution: I quit mounting fish, send my turkey heads out, and only use the gun when I absolutely have to.

I haven't tried the water-based yet.
Sounds like I probably should stay away from them, huh?
I have a good spray booth setup - don't get any fumes.

Respirators work well... you can get a good one for$30 bucks at Lowe's or Home Depot. Thats where I got mine. I use Laquer Base Paints. They are thinner and blend a whole lot better.
