If you're talking about having a wall, shoulder mount done, there's not too many things that can be done to it to make it unique. Wall mounts have not changed much since the 1800's. You can have an open mouth, eating or flehmening or you can have them rubbing a branch but that's pretty much it. Taxidermists that entered in competitions learned quick to get the deer mount off the wall and put it on a pedestal in order to show them off better.
Pedestal mounts are still the head, neck and shoulders of the deer but you can be very creative with the base and how the deer is attached to it. If you want to see some well done pedestal mounts go to taxidermy.com On the left side under WASCO AWARDS from 1994 to 2004 they have pics of some of the winners. Click on any year and there will be an option to look up the winners alphabetically. Look up Fred Vanderburgh, Jim Lynch, Pete Lajoie and Jim Willard under the alphabetical listing.
I've seen some very unique mounts at competitions...one had the deer mount coming out of the inside of a tree stump, one where the deer mount was cut in half from the nose to the shoulders and half was attached to a mirror and one that had the deer 'stuck' by the tongue to a light pole!!!! (I think the artist was trying to mimic the Christmas movie where the kid stuck his tongue to the light pole.)
When it comes to pedestal mounts, the pedestal can be more a work of art than the mount itself. Its only limits are your imagination.

That is true about being able to do so much more with a pedestal mount than a wall mount, I am doing quite a few pedestal mounts now days in my shop, all cost more because of the habitat base but customers dont seem to mind paying to get something special with their mounts.

, bowcrazylady... Great pictures birdman! I was eatin' breakfast with my buddy (who has the Ky. State Record, statechamp) last week when he told me a gentleman in the back of the restaurant had shot a 10-pointer earlier in the season while it was still in velvet. Gettin ready to pay the bill, the man asked my buddy if he had ever been over to his house to see his mounts. What are we waitin' fer? I couldn't believe my eyes and the various mounts, to name a few he had two mulies locked, that was for you country2dbone, a monster hog boar and one of the neatest deer mounts I ever saw... He thumped an 8 or 10 pointer with his bow and when he found him, the buck had tried to pull the arrow out of his body with it's mouth and failed. The deer expired with the arrow and fletching still in his mouth sticking out of his body. That was the way he had the buck mounted. I'm going to make it a point this coming week to eat breakfast and take my camera with me to get some pictures...
