-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I went turkey scouting last week and like so many times before, found more drinking sign than turkey sign. It seemed like everywhere I looked, their was a beer can. I just don't understand why some think they can't enjoy a day in the woods without having to be hammered why they're out there. I myself don't drink, however I see nothing wrong with having a drink if it's done responsibly, but stumbling through the woods,(three sheets in the wind )with a loaded gun is NOT responsible. I believe that if a person can't enjoy a day of hunting without bringing along the booze, then maybe they should stay home and get hammered before someone gets killed. I'm not trying to offend anybody but the truth is the truth. Alcohol has no place in hunting or anywhere else that guns are present. what do you guys think?

I completely agree with what your saying -- BUT How do you know the cans came from people hunting ?

I hear you! I'm not adverse to alcohol at all, just the misuse of it. When I was in the military, just before I arrived at work one nite as an MP, one of my people accidently shot himself through the jaw and neck. He lived, but there are just some things I never forget, and whenever I'm handling a gun, or around someone who is, is when those memories usually come back. I'll go overboard on safety, and expect nothing less in anyone I'm with!
You all have a good day!

OK. Like I said I understand what you are saying. I just don't like to jump to conclusions of something that may have happened. And these people are NOT hunters. Lets make that clear ! Hunters need to stick together. There are those out there that feed off this stuff for all the wrong reasons.

I am with brd-n-spr, You never know what trash deposited the litter. But on the subject I agree alchohol has no place with weapons. Drink after if you have to and clean up after yourself. DM

I agree that alcohol and guns don't mix. Now it is true that hunters must stick together and I really don't see this being a debate topic. patdoyle seen the evidence and we did not. If it was hunters, they need to be taken care of. I support hunting but, I do not support bad hunters. They need to go as they give us all a bad name. Now, to me the person or persons who left the cans would clearly be an outdoorsman of some sort. Even if they are just joy riding on 4wheelers, that is dangerous, wrong and illegal. Not to mention littering. The only other thing could be someone from a timber company of some sort for the cans to be down in the woods. I've caught many hunters drunk while hunting. I'm just glad that I am good friends with a State Trooper as I can make a phone call and get that person taken care of before he hurts or kills someone. Drinking has it's time and place.

I used to enjoy throwing a few back before my diabetes and cancer came along, but Never in the woods. I have zero tolerance for it. I had a hunting club I started a few years ago, one of the members and good friends was there drinking 1 day It wasn't season for anything big deal right. I told him he was no longer a member and he got really po'ed but too bad. If you cant drink at home dont bring it into the woods period.... I won't even go fishing with someone when they are throwing some down. Too dangerous to me. I beat cancer to enjoy the rest of my life, hopefully not to be cut short by some idiot with poor judgement

Drinking of alcohol in moderation in the evening when all weapons are unloaded , properly stored and the big tales begin I can tolerate ,but never while handling weapons. I have quit hunting with a fella and don't let him on my land because he has increased his habit over the years to the point that I don't want to be with him.I still like the guy but I don't care for his lifestyle! While on the subject,I wrote in another post awhile back how my town would change when turkey season neared. There won't be a motel room available for miles around and business will be hopping. There will be trucks/atvs/trailers lined up at the gas pumps filling with fuel, ice, and drink. I know the stores enjoy the business and I wish them the best of profits but I could do without the "Welcome Hunters Beer Signs"hanging everywhere, even across the darn driveways. To me this is like saying to the public that hunters are by far the best consumers of alcohol know to man.All beer companies are doing it and it has become a competition on who can get the most signs put up in town.I don't think it helps public relations at all with promoting our sport. I'm not against having a cold one---but wouldn't a sign saying beer for sale be enough said? Then once inside I can find the price and brand on my own.

That is some good points.
You know, I would even stand behind a law that if an individual got a DWI or DUI and lost their driver's license that they also lost their hunting license for that period of time as well.
I don't have a problem with folks who drink and I don't have a problem with them drinking at the camp after the sun goes down. I might even kick back a couple. But there is a time and place for it. We had a guy in our club that would pack his lunch and beer and stay all day. We caught him one day as he returned to the camp at dark and was plastered. He was immedately released from the club at that point.

I agree 100% I quit shooting at two diffrent trap clubs due to the use of alcohol at the clubs. People were bringing out the own coolers full of beer and getting trashed. Now I do drink, but if I'm going shooting, the beer stays at camp till we are done shooting, or till I get home. The club I shoot at now has a very strick no alcohol policy.
