Does it, like, bother anyone else, like, when people, like, use the word like, like, too much?
I know it does me. It's worse than nails on a chalkboard. And I wouldn't mind if it was only used occasionally. But it's not. No, 'like' has taken the place of, 'um'; a pause; 'similar to'; 'he/she said'; or, for no particular reason whatsoever. And it's not as if the people that are butchering English always do it because of a lack of things to say. People will actually raise their hand in class (which says to me that you have your crap together and already know what you're going to say), and then proceed to go into a string of semi-connected thoughts where the word like is not separated by more than 4 words. The final straw in this rant came when a professor of mine, a man with a Ph.D, used like incorrectly, to take the place of, “and he said....”
Using like excessively, to me, is a sign of a lack of intelligence, something that I thought would be weeded out at least in upper (300) level college courses. But it seems to find it's way into all levels of college aged people.
/rant off...that feels better.

I don't "LIKE" it either. It's like a 2 thousands replacement for uh and um, you know. We got a CEO for our copany that uses you know like all the time.
Sorry, you know I like had to get that off my chest, you know.
I was listening to a radio station the other day and it had a Sienfeld audio clip and he was talking about a poll that was taken on what poeple fear the most. # 1 on the list was public speaking. #2 was death. He summed it up with "at a funeral, more poeple would rather be in the casket than giving the ulogy"'. I can deal with most things but am a professional meeting attender (feel that way anyhow) and I speak alot as well as hear alot of briefs. My biggest pet peeve is someone making a point and then rephrasing it and making it again and then reiterating and then saying it again. I was in Norfolk for the last two days attending a meeting and there was a lady in the front row that just wouldn't shut up. I swear it would take her and hour and a half to watch 60 minutes.
