Last wednesday afternoon a good friend and fellow co-worker fell out of his treestand. I called him last night to see how he was doing. This is the first I talked to him. It seems he was climbing a tree that had moss all over it and was wet to boot. He has an old treestand that has rubber on the inside of the V notch and rubber on the band that goes around the tree. He wasn't wearing a safety harness, but was wearing a safety belt that went around your waist.
As he was climbing the tree, he slipped once but kept going higher. As soon as he got where he was going, he reached down to grab his bow rope and everything let loose and he and treestand slipped down the tree. The safety rope slid down the tree also and when he got about 6 feet from the ground the rope got caught on a knot and the belt around his waist tightened and he was dangling about 3 feet off the ground.
After he got himself freed he couldn't hardly move. He just left everything up there on the top of the mountain and made a grueling walk back to his car which took 2 1/2 hours. Then he drove himself to the hospital. Now he's at home resting. He was supposed to be on vacation this week for the rut, now he'll miss it and possibly rifle season too.

Hey trkyhntr, We'll put him in our prayers & hope he recovers well and quickly! I've heard that wearing just a waist strap can be more dangerous than not wearing anything at all. I had a tree stand that walked down the tree with me in it & left the hand climber hanging during an ice/sleet storm. When I got to the ground it was like springing off a diving board. Busted the stand all to pieces & bounced me out 6 feet from the tree but I was ok. I had just turned around to face the tree & leaned against it to look around behind me and that slight shift in my weight was all it took to break the stand loose. It was one that had the rubber against the tree. Scary stuff...
