Friday evening, had rain most of the day and now tonight severe flooding again .Soybeans are under water for the fourth time, levees are breaking or running over, highway closed, so much for being prepared to hunt Monday morning but still planning on an early morning hunt if at all possible. Going to try to move some catfish tomorrow, the weather may be fine for that. Needs to be done soon before the temps fall and the water gets too cold.

Flooding continues as the creeks and rivers can't contain the rainfall we are receiving. This water is overflowing into my cropfield and flooding my driveway,so I'm stranded for the day at least.

Driveway under water and Hazel Creek is overflowing thousands of gallons per second into my fields and front yard, going to be an interesting as well as expensive day.

Found some time to hunt this evening. I had moved a stand last Sat to the West side of my East farm so I wanted to finish the setup for later when the rut kicks in. I needed to add a bowhanger of some sort and place a safety harness above the stand but as my luck goes when I was approaching the stand as quietly as I could the deer were already under it. There were two 10 pt and two 6 point bucks feeding on acorns within a few yards of the tree. I would have taken one of the 10 pointers if I could have, but it never worked out for me. I stayed long enough to finish the stand set up and left the woods looking forward to the fall days ahead.

Hunted this evening from 4:30 until dark, saw 19 deer, 4 turkey, an owl and lots of squirrels. Three of the deer were bucks, a spike, a 6 pt and a small 8 pt. The 8 pt worked a scrape 7o yards away from my stand and also rubbed a couple trees.

Hunted this evening from 4:45 until dark, saw 9 deer, 5 were bucks, all 8 point or more. I had everything finished on my favorite stand last night and felt this evening would be a good time to hunt from it. It has been raining or misting most of the day but stopped at 3:30 so I was hoping the bucks would get up early and start moving. My favorite stand sight( The West Stand) is about 80 yards from the road, so it's a close one to get into, The big guys have been bedding to the West of it all summer on my neighbor. Not tonight, when I got to within 40 yards of my stand I saw antlers, looking through binocs I made out an 8 pt.Five minutes later I picked out a big 10 point, probably score in the 160's .For the next hour I was pinned on the ground watching the big buck get up move my way only to bed down again. I wanted to be in my stand but there was no way of making it,He got up and back down 3 different times. When he got up the last time he headed slowly my way, I got as ready as I could be still wishing I were in my stand. The depression he had been bedded in soon became a major problem for me as he went out of sight over the sharp rise right in front of me , I knew this would happen but hoped for the best, Seemed like an hour but maybe five minutes later I started to rise from my kneeling position for a chance of getting a shot. Of course I looked the wrong direction first, he was coming around to the right instead of the left and at 40 yards I couldn't get a shot, too far for me in this situation, He felt something was wrong , ran 15 yards ,looked back at me for a minute or so then walked out of sight to the East. I eased out to the truck and drove to the old barn to feed some cattle and as I drove into the East driveway there were 3 deer eating pears from my pear tree. Another attempt underway as one of them was a good P&Y buck, a 10 pt, the other a decent 8 . I made a stalk using some hay bales in the old garden for cover and closed the gap to 50 yards. Running out of light, I decided to try something, I rattled at them, they ran fast away from me for 50 more yards, looked in my direction a few minutes then started grazing. I walked out into the open, fed the cows ,got into my truck and as I was leaving the bucks were still at 100 yards watching me.
Didn't get a thing on this hunt but had a great time and saw some beautiful deer. Tomorrow morning I plan to be waiting for daylight from one of my 7 stands, which one I don't have a clue .

Managed an evening bowhunt starting at 4:3o PM until dark. Hunted the West stand again and just about put it all together tonight. Maybe by the weekend it will work out for me. The first deer past was a small 8 pt at 5 yards, second deer a doe at 7 yards, third an 8 pt at 45 yards, 4th a nice 13 pt at 50 yards, all headed East towards my ladder stand by the old cabin. By 5:30 all deer changed direction, started coming from the East ,going West. The 5th deer was a 10 pt at 6o yards, he made a scrape and a rub straight North of my stand.Five minutes later the 6th deer a huge 8 pt, he would score upper 140's easy, he takes the same path, hits the same scrape ,then rubs the same tree.Another five minutes and out comes #7, another 10 pt, about a 140 in buck, and he too hits the scrape & rub tree.A short time later #8 deer shows up at the scrape, main frame 8pt with 2 stickers coming off of main antler points.Number 9 deer comes past the scrape and he too is a 10 point,he has a high rack but main beams aim high toward the sky and somewhat short but after working the scrape he heads my way.I have seen several deer I would rather take but I was planning to shoot this dude cause by now I'm worn out taking the bow down from the hanger. He fed on acorns straight at me but took the low side of the ridge and when in range at 30 yards I could only see his head and none of his body, he stayed there until dark, when I climbed down he took a few jumps North and watched me leave. When I got to the truck there were 4 does feeding in front it on the roadside. Drove 3 miles to my house and there were 4 does in my front yard, not a bad 2 hours of hunting--wife can't figure out why I never get one---that is a good question and Ican't answer it !

Two days ago We had a cool snap, hit 22 degrees for a low, still had ice in the creek at 3 in the afternoon. Now it has warmed back up,shirt sleeve weather and I can't see a deer to save myself, last two nights have been a bust. Do see some late after dark but nothing during shooting hours. This has been the trend with my fellow hunting contacts, they too are in great deer country in North Mo and have had close to zero sightings the last two days.Weather forecast is for hot temps next few days. Youth season opens Sat so I will be out hunting ,if the temps would have stayed down the kids would have had the best season ever, Nov 1 and 2nd. Maybe my grandson can show me how it's done.

Weather has been hot and deer not moving very good. I hunted this morning for two hours and saw nothing. My friend from NC is back here in Mo hunting with his son not far West of my farm and this afternoon at 4:30 pm 11 year old Cameron made a 200 yard shot on this 9 point with his 7mm short mag. Cam has been to my place 3 years and this makes his 3rd deer with 3 shots fired. I need to take lessons from him, maybe I could get something.

My 11 year old grandson Dylan took his first deer this evening while hunting with his Dad, Cliff. This weekend was our youth season in Mo so Dylan took up hunting for the first time. Sat they didn't see any deer, Sun morning it was so foggy they went home until 3pm then went to my clover plot at the east double ladder stand. About 30 minutes before dark this large doe stepped out and he made a 150 yard shot with his .243. I went to help them get her out of the field and I couldn't believe what I saw, Dylan was calm and Cliff( dad) was a nervous wreck. It seems the 11 year old hunters are doing great this year in my area. By the way I bowhunted this morning, didn't see anything!!
