Is there a chance you were holding a plastic stocked model, and not the laminated? That seems likely the case.

Randy, yep it was the black composite stocked model. Most stores don't carry the "laminated stock" version. I'd love to handle that one, mainly to see how that particular model feels as far as balance goes.

It makes the gun FAR more neutrally balanced, and softer shooting. Looks great, too.

I agree, I've owned both in the Savage and I like the feel of the laminated stock much better. You also can get an SMI barrel for the Encore and have the feel your comfortable with in a smokeless powder gun.
