I agree with sandy cove. Feathers do slow the arrow a few feet per second. My personal choice is vanes because I hunt in wet conditions a lot. Feathers when released cover my glasses with water drops. Another choice you may want to think about is the new blazer vanes. They are much smaller than the standard vanes but still stabilize the flight. To combat the wet problem of feathers you can use an unscented hair spray on them or use the fly tyers friend dry fly flotant. It makes the feathers water repellant.

The Truth about feathers -
NOISE - Your bow generates about 80 decibels when shot. Because of the inverse square law, bow noise dissipates quickly. At 6 yards the noise at a deers ear will approach 56 dB, loud enough to startle the animal. At 25 yards the bow sound is 44 dB, not enough to spook a deer. However, the noise made by the arrow gets louder as the arrow approaches. Vane flutter and air rushing through the broadhead vents can create noise levels of 85 dB, which can make a deer & jump.
LOOKS & FLIGHT - Wet weather will not improve the looks of your feather, but hey, it's still better looking than a vane. I have used the Fletch-Dry &/or Aqua-net hairspray to 'protect' my feathers whether or not I thought they may get wet. I have news for you though, I have shot my feathers in the mist, the rain and once in a complete dog and cat thunderstorm; although we felt it seems more like a cow and pig thunderstorm to us. The feathers will mat sure, but with a little steam and fatherly love, they'll still shoot just fine, I could still hit the ten ring at 25 yards, on the other hand, seeing through the peep was a different matter all together.
Durability - I'm not even sure where to begin on this one... I have used the same vanes to shoot (20yards/Fingers-296/300), and their torn up. EVERYONE I know who gets a tear in their vane from the woods or from a point, puts the arrow a side and replaces the vane within the next few days. The nice thing about feathers, tear the not so good looking piece of quill off; and keep shooting.

I've shot feathers since my days of fingers and instinctive shooting. Now I shoot release and pins and a ripcord rest. I shot vanes a few times here and there for a change up. But mainly feathers. Just never had any problems with them. I water proof them and they work fine. I guess if it aint broke dont fix it.
