I'm very inecperienced when it comes to duck hunting. I've got a small farm pond on my property, as well as a small beaver pond. The last couple of days there have been some ducks in the farm pond at different times of the day. Any advice on how to best hunt them, what times of day, what load of steel shell, decoy advice, etc. I am in southern alabama by the way. I would appreciate any advice, and I don't know what kind of ducks they are either.

we hunt alot of farm ponds here in oklahoma.. what we do is get there early in the morning and set out about 1/2 dozen mallard decoys, maybe a couple goose decoys, and set an wait till day light.. farm ponds are cool cause the ducks get so used to coming in to that certain pond calling really isnt a factor... we usually use 2's and 4's 3'' and 2 3/4'' shells will work fine.. the decoy really put them where you want them... good luck...

Early morning is when we hunt them here. I usually put out closer to 2 dozen decoys.

Early moring is the best time to get them. I put out 8 to 10 decoys in smaller creeks I have never hunted a small pond. I guess you would have to determine how many you need for the size of pond. I would say if they are coming in everyday that a half dozen deeks would be sufficient. You shouldnt need to call much since they are already coming in there. Make sure you are completely concealed these birds know what the area around that pond look like. I have seen alot of videos of duck hunts down there and it is much different than Michigan. Up here if you move set the deeks up wrong dont conceal yourself you might as well stay in bed becuase there arent as many ducks around this area. If you get in there early and get hidden you should do well. I would use #4 steel it will give you more pellets and the birds should be plenty close for penetration. If you want to use #2 it would work well also. You could use heavy shot or bismuth if you wanted, but I cant see spending the extra money on that when these birds are gonna land right on top of you.
