As for myself, I use flintlocks for my waterfowl hunting, but this year my friend Bill decided to try something even harder.
Bill has been practicing with a re-curve bow, shooting at flying targets.
So, this year for the early goose hunt here in Ohio, Bill is using his bow and I shoot backup with a flintlock.
We decided to hunt this past Saturday and as the weather gods gave us good "goose hunting weather", it drizzled all day.
We set up in a pasture where the geese have been feeding. We set out about 1½ doz. full bodies. Our blinds consisted of "very large" goose decoys. Bill was on all fours and looked like a turtle with that decoy on his back. I was lying on my back with the decoy at my side to cover up with when the birds were spotted. Only when I tried to pickup the decoy its head came off. So there I was with a decapitated goose and the head in my hand and "turtle Bill" laughing at me.
This was the most fun I've had hunting geese. Bill missed about 10 geese from different flocks (including a multiple miss on a flock that landed in front of him. It seems the bow didn't bother them. As for me, well with all the rain, I had 4 pan flashes, 1 no nothing and 3 misses with long delays between flash and boom. The rain sure play havoc with the flinter.
To finish our day we took a lunch break down the street only to come back and find 6 geese in our decoys. Bill left his arrows under one of the large decoys, so he decided to try to swing around the decoys and geese and come up the back side. I was moving parallel to Bill in hopes that I would get a shot if the birds left. Bill made all the way to the setup and launch a couple of shots before the birds left. I never had a chance.
Later that evening we tossed a couple of targets for Bill and he hit all of them. Think maybe the excitement got to him.
We are going to try this again this weekend.
