Took my nephew out with a friend of mine for his first duck hunt. The day started out slow for us plenty of birds flying just could not get them to commit. You ever hunt with a guy who just can't keep his head down. Well my friend has the nickname Prairie dog now. Prairie dog could only hunt till 10:00 and with me taking the only bird (Bufflehead). The morning was spent watching birds come by and flare before gun range and listening to prairie dog complaining he could of went deer hunting instead. After we dropped him off I decided to stick it out to see if we could get him his first duck. I told him the birds would commit now that prairie dog had left to sight in his muzzle loader. The birds didn't fly for a couple of hours but when they did they followed the line right on in. He missed the first flock of 25 birds but they circled back and he dropped one. You should of seen his face holding his first Bluebill. He managed to drop another to complete his limit while I was retrieving a couple of ducks. The duck landed upside down with his legs kicking and he shot it again. I asked him why did he shot it again he told me he thought it was getting away. I just laughed telling him they can't take off and fly upside down. Back in the blind I noticed one of my decoys sinking and thought oh no he shot it. Sure enough I went out and removed a brand new decoy with about 8 holes in it. I am going to mount it to a board and engrave a plate Chad's first duck and give it to him on Christmas. He is now hooked said he rather waterfowl hunt than deer hunt now. Now if only I could get my 16 year old son back into hunting but he is girl crazy now. My daughter is 13 and can't wait. I love taking kids hunting I think next time I will just take a video camera and leave the gun at home.
