Don't winter goose hunt much anymore because of membership cost coupled with the drastic change in migration habit's make it financially unfeasible here in Ky. Geese just don't come down the flyway. What a change from 15yrs ago Occasionally i get lucky and get a flock to come into my duck hunting hole, where 4 of us kill around 40 ducks a year. Not bad considering that the ducks have changed somewhat themselves, tho not on the scale of geese.Plus there is not someone hunting it everyday.

Right now we are hunting a little hill right in the flight path of the geese as they fly out to feed...We can hear them getting noisey long before they take off from their roosting areas...as they come over the hill next to us I start hammering the calls...They usually set their wings and glide right in...We are using a couple dozen deeks...(one dozen full body and one dozen silhouettes that I made last year)...We are laying out on a couple of 3/4" slant boards that I made with just a few milkweeds around us...The deeks are setout in small "Family" groups with an opening for the ones coming in right in front of our blinds...I'm using my Browning BPS with Hevi-Shot #2s and a Kick's Highflier choke tube...I use a Mick Lacy short reed and a Buck Gardner "Canada Hammer II" short reed and a no name Goose Flute...Here's some pics for ya: Some of my hand made Silhouettes: Here are the layout blinds...My brother is in the one on the right: Locked and dropping: Mornings take...Bob my Browning is laying on top of his take to the right:

We use two dozen greenhead gear shells in a big old cornfield along a river. There is a ditch with some cover runnin' through the middle of the field where we hide. Last season we did really well there and cannot wait until this year. We are thinkin' about talkin to the farmer and asking him to leave us about a 10 ft. square of corn standing to hide in in the middle of the field. We'll see though.

we have 2 dozen g&h mag shells with flocked heads, 1 dozen bigfoots with flocked heads, 1 wing waver, 2 flags, 2-3 layouts, 2-3 guns, and me on the call. all set up in the corn fields along the river or on the "X". worked great for the last 3 years!

Canadians....I vaguely remember them here in South Texas!!! Killed a 'honker' with a wingspan of 104" when I was about 12, out of a flock of 7 that I stalked for about a week in the marsh....Made my Dad mad...he had killed one with a span of 97" the year before!! Those notches on the fence are a fond remembrance of him!! Used to be herds of 'em when I was a kid...all kinds of geese. Used to just pass shoot geese.....have a pickup bed full, no lie!! Now, we have to deke them in, snows, blues, and specks, usually using Northwinds....love those Northwinds. The hunt here usually consists of setting up in corn or milo stubble with about 80 or so dekes. We live about a mile from the Guadalupe Delta Wildlife Management Area, and about 6 miles from the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge.....lots of marshes to go with all the fields. Gotta be in the right place at the right time to have a good day!! Steve & Susan
