Just a little background to start off because this post is not about a booner but it sure was fun. I came down with MS a while back and about the only thing left working is my left hand. With the rut heating up, I had to figure out a way to rattle antlers with one not so good hand. My wife and I were monkeying this afternoon and came up with a way to fasten one antler to the wheelchair (with a vacuum hose!) in a way that kept the sound natural. I know, boohoo, poor me, and all that stuff but I really didn't know how to make it work and I really have enjoyed rattling up good bucks in the past.
Now, back to the good story. I sat in the stand grunting periodically and tickling the antlers about every half hour until 6:00. Then, with about a half hour of hunting time left, I got pretty serious with the rattling for about 40 seconds. A few minutes passed and I spotted a deer slipping crossways through the woods at about 75 yards. He was in pretty heavy popples but I could catch a glimpse of antler once in a while as he worked through. He came to a point off to my side where he disappeared. 10 minutes passed with no sign of him. I tried lightly grunting with no response. I figured I had to make something happen before shooting light disappeared so I tickled the antlers together lightly. That did it! He came running up to the stand, right across my mock scrape, paying no attention to it. He ran up within 12 feet! He knew exactly where the sound had come from but didn't have a clue I was there. Only 7 points but a fairly decent sized rack. Just wait until he grows up!
