Me and a few friends went down to the low country last week on a 4 day hunt and we had a blast. Here's the story of the big one. I was hunting over a 40 acre 3-4 year old clear cut surrounded by hardwoods and tall pines. At 8:15 a.m. big boy steps out of the tall pines into my shooting lane, quarters away and stops 80 yards out. I steady the 308 on him and squeeze the trigger. He bolts across the shooting lane and into the clear cut. I lose sight of him because the weeds are about 7-8 feet tall in there but I can see the weeds moving where he's running. About 40 yards in, I can't see weeds moving anymore but a few seconds later I hear what I think is him crashing. So, I sat there about 15 seconds and got down, just kidding, about 10 minutes and I walk over to where I shot at him and I can't find any blood. So I walk over to where he entered the clear cut and I find a few small drops of blood. I walk into the clear cut searching for blood and can't find anymore so I decide to just go back to the club house and wait on my buds to come out and help me look. So I'm pacing back and forth imagining the worst but I feel very confident that I made a good shot. I call one of the guys that was hunting the other end of the clear cut and told him when he came down to meet me at my stand and help me look. He says,"well, I just shot a bobcat so I'll meet you over there now." So we search for my deer for about 2 hours and find nothing. It's so thick in that clear cut that you would have to walk up on the deer to actually see it. Anyways, he kept saying,"maybe you just got the fever and wounded him." But, I know I was steady when I squeezed the trigger. So we go back to the club house and eat lunch and tell the other guys about the situation. My cousin says,"come on. we are going to find your buck." 40 yard into the clear cut and 5 minutes later Allen hollers and says,"here's your deer." I run over there and to my surprise an 8 point buck laying on top of a doe. Here's the deal. Daniel, the same guy that helped me look the first time, hunted this stand the morning before and shot a doe but couldn't find it. Well, after I shot my deer, he ran through the clear cut and literally piled up on top of Daniel's doe. We leave the deer there and go back to get a camera. I tell Daniel that I found my deer but there's a huge rattle snake curled up right beside it. He love's to kill rattle snakes. So he's running around like a chicken with its head cut off looking for a stick big enough to kill it. We hop on the 4 wheelers and go after this snake, hahahahah. I wish I would have taken a picture of his face when he walks up and sees my deer laying on top of his doe. "Man, that's my doe." Come to find out, Allen actually sniffed my deer out by smelling that dead doe. It had already ruined in 24 hours setting out in the sun like that. Anyways, my deer ended up weighing in at 165 with and outside spread of 16-1/4, good mass, and tine length. Official measurements coming soon along with a pic of my buck on top of Daniels doe.
Can you see the head and neck of my buck on top of the belly of Daniel's doe?
