Wow, is that a loaded question. It's like asking who's the best running back of all time, everyone will have a different opinion. I suppose it depends on the area that you are in (ah...duh . Down south, with the heat and in some areas lack of rain, I'm sure that near water would be a viable option. Up here in da Nort, late afternoons along field edges can be productive. Still other areas, deer maybe "hunkered down" and in the thick stuff. I guess my answer would be ya just got to pattern deer for your specific area.

ACTUALLY I LIKE THE THICKER COVER JUST OFF THE FOOD SOURCE SO 1 VOTE EACH BUT THE FOOD IS MOST IMPORTANT. THE WATER AIN'T BAD IF IT'S THE ONLY WATER AROUND.

i didn't vote, i can tell you though if you are going to hunt in the afternoon and it's not peak rut, avoid me, i didn't see a thing today, i thought with the rain then it clearing out i might see a buck freshening his scrapes along a scrape line, apparently the does aren't using this trail any more, at least today... hmmm.. other people are starting to become an influence in my hunting. or maybe its the acorn thing, gotta get this figured out, i feel like i'm playing catch up with the deer

I voted thick cover, Primarily due to thats where i hunt . The area i hunt in is 99% wooded, there are old logging roads, and snowmachine trails. I find nice kinda open spot within, sit and wait.

I voted near a food source, however this is more important the further along in the year you get. The colder the weather the more reliable the "food source" hunt will be. If you cna get cold weather during the rut, the does will come to the food early and the bucks cannot help but follow their..........well you know! Food is the #1 priority unless hunting pressure puts them down until dead dark!!

Trails leading from thicker cover to open fields would be my choice in earlier parts of the season before rut or in late season. During the rut the does will be looking for food and water so hunt close to them.
