Ok time to storm the memory bank. Do you guys remember your first ever deer you shot? I'll never forget the first deer I shot. It was archery season when I was 14 years old. I had an older Hoyt bow and a couple doe's came in together and I picked out the bigger of the two and pulled back.
I was so nervous I was about shaking out of my boots. I let go and "CRACK" down went the deer. Yep a perfect spine shot. She was flopping all over the ground letting out these horrible cries for help. I felt absolutely terrible. I quickly climbed out of my tree and knocked another arrow. I shot her through the lungs and then she started gurgling. I got so nautious I actually puked. I swear I never wanted to hunt again.
It took me quite awhile before I did go hunting again. To this day I have never gotten as nervous as I did that day. It was an experience I'll never forget I can guarantee you that.

It was 30 years ago, I was 16 and hunting NY's Southern Tier deer season...Back then you got Party Permits that allowed one hunter in the party to take an antlerless deer...I was standing watch on a ridge on State land when 2 deer came screaming by me...The first one was to fast but I picked an opening between to trees and as soon as the next deer came into the opening I tripped the trigger...I can still see that deer doing a complete flip in mid air and landing hard on the ground...Man was I shaking after that shot...It turned out to be a darned good sized button buck...

My father and I will never forget my first deer. We were hunting on the airbase that year and opening morning we saw this big buck with one antler when we were driving in. I begged my dad to pull over and let me shoot it but no way would he do that. I marked the area and scouted around and found a spot that I thought the buck was roaming. My brother came home from college one weekend and my father and I showed him my stand which I was quite proud of and would never get in one like it today. But we jumped that buck when I showed him where i was hunting. A few weeks later I got the buck. Back then does werent allowed and was very proud of my scouting efforts to get that deer. Looking back it was all sheer luck.

my first deer is seared in my mind. I had started hunting in '92 kinda a folly year then in '93 i picked up a bow and made some half hearted attempts, in '94 i gave it a better attempt with the bow, meaning i went on a regular basis.
I had my stand set up near a clear cut edge on a well worn trail, i left my stand at this place and for two-three weeks, i was in it every day either in the morning or in the evening. There was a group of does that were like clock work, either at 830am they would be returning from the nights events or at 430pm heading out for the night, two does and two fawns , a regular pattern, i kept passing on them cause i wanted a buck, i had these deer under me so many times but they never spooked. once one was directly under my feet, i had to look through the grates of my stand in order see to her.
last morning before the season closed for the week "resting" period just before gun season. i decided i was going to take one of the deer, or end up eating my tag. So 830am rolls around, no deer, i waited and waited, but no deer, i was so upset with myself for not taking a deer when i had the chance, then i hear the shuffle of hooves parting leaves on the dry forest floor, i watch as three does pass out of range, and for some reason they were going the wrong way, they were coming out of the clearcut instead of going into it like they had every other time. I couldn't get a shot at the deer and they walked out of my life forever, kicking myself again, i look and the last doe was behind them, but closer to me, i took aim, tunnel vision over took me, i had to lean against the tree with my elbow to keep my balance and i let on fly, i saw the arrow go in but don't really remember what she did , i watched as she ran off and slowed down, i heard her go over and the elation i felt was unmistakable.
i sat in the tree reliving what i could remember and the woods suddenly burst with deer running in all directions. they disappeared into the clearcut, a few moments later, oink, oink, a pretty little six pointer saunters by, i only had the one tag, at the time doe tags were not as plentiful as they are now, so i watched as this buck walks within range grunting like a pig, nose to ground,
man i learned alot on that day, including how to field dress a deer, never done it before and didn't have any one to show me, so i just did the best i could, i did know to bring the heart and liver home, and on the drag out, the tag fell out of the ear, so i had to back track for that , plus i didn't have a rope to drag the deer, so i dragged it by it front leg, holy cow man, talk about being green!!
I figured out that this doe was probably in heat, and the bucks probably had been harassing this group of does all night, hence why they were traveling the wrong way.
i have a photo but it's not scanned yet, it'll make it's way on here some day, i'm sure

It was either 1970 or 71. A small buck shot with my dad guiding me thru it!

Mine was in the early 70's. Can't remember the exact year. I shot a doe with my grandfathers old 303 British. That gun always shot high to the left. Don't ask me how I hit that deer I think it was chit luck!

No problem as the mount hangs in my office! I was 12 so it was 1977. I was hunting the gun season in southern MN. It was the last evening of season and though I worked my tail off, there had been no chances. I neared a road on the back side of my uncles place and up pulled two people I knew. As we visited, they said they were about to hunt their land across the road and I was welcome to cover the creek there if any snuck out.
I found a good spot and settled in. Tons of noise proved to be a doe walking up the dry, reed covered creek bed. She came right through passing 5 feet in front of me! I figured I had the perfect spot! A short time later,I spotted movement in the reeds but this time, there wasn't a sound! As I watched, I suddenly could make out antlers, big ones! The buck was coming up the same trail the doe had taken so, other than my jackhammering heart and my hyperventillating, I was relaxed and ready!
The buck kept coming but took a fork in the trail that made him pass 7 feet BEHIND me! When he was almost past, I spun around and shot. Now I'd like to say I slipped one well placed shot into him. In reality though, after putting five slugs into his ribs as fast as I could work the slide, I only put two more into the gun, then shot him in the neck.
Twelve pointer. What a way to start! Don

I was living in Maine in a town called Island falls, My dad who had never hunted got me a 12 gauge and I was 12 years old. It was a 4 point and I empited the gun on him. I thought he was still alive. I got 30 yards from him as I pretended not to know he was there. I walked and raised the gun and shot in a quick motion. I had buck shot and slugs in that gun. I only have tree teeth now :PTim

I remember mine, it was in '99 on opening nmorning, shot him with rem. mod. 700 in 308. he came out of the trees about 30 yrds from me, which i never saw until he was about 15 yrds, standing there staring in my derection. wha t a rush!! He just stood there, so i opted to shoot to the left of lft shoulder, 150grn win. power pt did very well. when shot, he was pushed bk about 5" and then took of running, he did a half circle then his front legs were just like they were running in slow motion, he turned again and dropped in the same spot i shot him in. Well the worst part was i had forgot a drag rope, and in a morning wake up daze didnt grab my knife ( after sharpening it the night before ) I had to drag him back 300yrds whole!! He only weighted 112 lbs dressed, But man what a time that was!! I havnt forgotten either item sence then.

I remember everything about the day I got my first deer like it was yesterday. But I got an even bigger rush the day each of my sons took their first deer.
