Here in the South you can almost bet that if you put up a marker....your are A: going to loose a stand, B: Catch someone IN your stand, C: lead the game warden to your stand...OR...D: None of the above....
If I hunt Public land...then I use marking flags...orange, yellow or green vinyl flags on a stiff wire...I put them at the entry to area I am hunting....bending the wire in the direction I need to go and then after quite a few yards in I will put more leading to the area I want to hunt...Leaving a stand on public land down here is a NO NO.

Alex.....I always worry about putting up markers and leaving stands out even on private property for some or all of the reasons you mentioned. I have my own "code" if you will in how I place my markers......high or low on a tree....2 or 3 markers and how they are placed mean different things and you can't stand at some markers and see any other markers based on the "code". Sometimes it's created a problem when I've sent someone to one of my stands....I see them that night only to find out they couldn't find my stand so I guess the code is working!!
