Does anyone have a sure-fire way of finding these babies? They are like needles in haystacks for me. I'll find some one year and go back the next and there aren't any there. Do they not come up in the same place every year? Is there any particular type of ground cover or tree or soil that they prefer? Should I look on the sunny side or the shaded side of hills? Is it okay to pick the whole thing or should you cut them off? They don't have roots so I would think you could just pull them up and still be okay but, so far that hasn't worked.
Anyway, I love the darned things and any assistance in finding them would be greatly appreciated.
Rich

I find them on the same hills every year. Not in exactly the same spot all the time but they are near where I've found them before. The best spot is around dead elm trees. Something about a dead elm that makes em sprout, I'm sure there is a reason, but don't know why, all I know is they are there. I find them in woods with elm and ash trees too. There is a plant with a small white flower that I don't know the name of.(I will find out) These flower plants seem to like the same soil as the morel. If you find these chances are good it's a good morel spot. Also the morels come out right about the same time these plants start to bloom with the little white flowers. So I use the trees and the flower plants to tell me where and when I might start to get morels. These are my own observances in upstate NY. They usually don't come out here until after the first week in May. Warmth and rainfall affect the exact days they will come out. Some people I know harvest their morels with a knife and carry their harvested mushrooms in a mesh bag so spores can be released as they walk through the woods. I don't know for sure if this helps "reseed" the area. Good eyesight helps too! Good luck.

Never tried them canned. But, you are right about freezing them. You can do that but, like most things they just don't taste as good as the fresh one's. Man, I'm salivating Rich Morels, down home in Southwest Va. we called them Dry Land Fish, boy are they good ole Granny made them the same way she made fried chicken. We never had enough left for canning or freezing but I would bet they wouldn't be quite the same.

Yeah, I can't wait! I'm going bear hunting up near Kalispell the middle of May. My friends up there say they get bushels of them. I've found them, and others find them all up and down the Yellowstone.
