2010 season will be here in a couple of short weeks. Im trying to get a hunt in the lower part of the state that will be march 15th. if not, I'll have to wait until april 1st. ive already picked up several new places and they look good. Ive scouted a couple of places, and one has already be scratched from the list. Our NWTF banqet is coming up in two weeks, Ive been a sponser for 20 years, and this year Im letting them auction off a guided hunt for a youth that i also plan to film. Hope everything comes together, and we get a willing tom and some nice footage. Got to correct my shooting from last year, be confident, and make sure where that shot is going. I turned 56 in January, got two buldging disc, thanks to UPS, and guess i need to be thankful that i can get up and go battle these ole toms. Lets do this thing!

I went to a place that Ive just picked up to hunt, and as I stepped out of the truck, and quitely closed the door, a tom gobbles about 200 yds straight out in front of me on a hardwood ridge. 52 degrees, and he gobbled pretty good for about 10 min. I left and went to another place. The turkeys had really been scratching around alot, but I heard no gobbles. I got back in my truck, drove about 200 yds, and there were turkeys crossing the road. There were 2 nice gobblers not 5 yds from my truck. The bad thing is.... they were leaving my property and going to another person"s propety.

I was hoping to have some news of a kill by now, but things have not worked out. It has turned very warm too early in april, making it tough on this old man. The toms are not ready it seems like, or Im making all the wrong decisions. Ive had only one day where i should have takena bird. and that is bad. I had a couple of toms answer my call about 8:30 wednesday morning. I was in the corner of a pasture, and a creek was between me and the birds. it was very thick, but sometimes that's the way it goes. I told myself to be patient, dont over call. and make them find me. My hunting partner has a problem with his hearing now, and when a gobble came from down the creek , he didnt hear it. It took me about 2 miutes to figure out what was happening, and I crawled out and along the edge of the pasture. alot of honeysuckle and brush, nowhere to hide. I had a small rise in the pasture that helped me do a little moving. I peeked over the rise and there were four gooblers in the pasture, and I could just see the top of thier heads. They all gobbled at a crow, and I tried to figure out what to do. They were about 70 yds away, so I backed up and hid in the honeysuckle. I made a call, and it was about 2 minutes i see the top of a tom's head at 40 yds. The trouble was that he was also on the edge of the pasture, and i had alot of stuff to shoot through. another tom joined him, and I wanted to lean out and shoot, but Ive put a scope on my gun, and it was going to be tough. After 30 seconds they both turned around and went back out of sight. I crawled out a little and made my way lowly about 20 yds, i could see that 2 of the toms were leaving the pasture to my right at 55-60 yds. I called to them, they gobbled, and continued out of the field. The other two were about 10 yds behind them and were also going to leave the pasture. I took a shot at the 3rd tom, and rocked him, but he staggered back and ran straight to his left out of the field. I had missed. I put a scope on my gun to help this problem, but here we go again. I know it was a little bit of a long shot, but Ive taken birds with this gun at that distance. 2010 has started poorly.

I auctioned a youth hunt at our local NWTF banquet, and this past sunday I took the young man and dad out to the woods. We started at a location that I just picked up this year. Cattle farm, and alot of turkey scratching. We listened from a high point overlooking pastures on the other side. we heard gobblers on the other side,we headed that way. As we were getting close to where I thought we should set up, I heard a bird pitch f the tree. I looked up to my right, and saw a bird gliding toward us. The bird was above myhead maybe 10 fet, and landed to our left in the hardwoods, about 20 yds away. We didnt move, and I saw in the dim light it was a jake. I told the young man to shoot him, and he said he didint have a shot. The jake finally made us out, and began to putt. I made a few call, and he walked away. We sat down, and as it usually happens two toms started gobbling from here we just had been. I tried to call them to us, abut it was not working. I told the father and son we had o make a big circle and go back to the top of the ridge to get on the tom's same level. It took us about 10 minutes to get to the other side, and I gave a few yelps. The tom answeres me about 100 yds away. I got the young man in position, and made another yelp. The tom was at 60 yds, and then there I could see him walkng towad us, on this hardwood ridge. I saw another bird behind him, but couldnt make out what it was. The tom came up, went into strut at 35 yds, and then raised his head to take a look for the hen. I whispered to them young man to shoot, I heard him say he didnt have a shot. He was to my left at 5 yds, and had a oak tree blocking his view. The tom took a couple of more steps, and I heard the young man take his safety off. The tom was at 35 yds, standing erect, and the yound man fired. I saw the tom go down, flutter, regain his balance, and then fly away. The yound man was heart broken, and I treid to make him feel better, and said everybody misses sooner or later. We went to another spot about 10am, and I fired up a tom as soon as we hit the woods. He was about 300 yds from us, and we raced to a small hill in this nice oak forest. We quickly set up, and the bird was inside of 70 yds. we were slightly above him, and he was coming from our ight side at about 10oclock position. the young man was in place, gun up, I can see the top of the turkey's head making his way up the rise. He is about to step past a oak tree that would have put him at 35 yds. Instead he putts, and quickly turns and goes bck the way he came. I cutt at him and he gobbled and gobbled a couple of more times as he was walking away. I couldnt understand what he had seen, but he saw something he didnt like. We let him walk away, and I took us on a cirlce to our left, and set up again in about 15 minutes. I called, and the tom answered. He came to about 75 yds and hung up. I crawled out, and walked back about 150yds. I called , and he gobbled. I went another 75yds and called, and he gobbled again. I shut up and hoped he would try to follow the hen that was leaving him. He stayedput and gobbled about 10-15 more times, and then walked away. Shunked two times in one day. Rats!

Ive aquired a couple of new spots to hunt this year, and they look very promising. One of the tracks has turkeys that have a silver, or grey look to them. I would love to tag a nice gobbler with this colorization. Id have him mounted, but Im sure my wife wouldnt like it. I guess Im getting the cart before the horse. Our banquet is march 10, and our numbers have been off the last couple of years. This will be the 21st year that I sponser. Good luck to everybody this year, and be safe.

Ive picked several new places to hunt this year. Most of them are under 100 acres, but they have birds on them. Im in the process of seeing where the birds roost and travel. Most of the time when you think you have them figured out, you dont. I guess thats the biggest challenge. Im supposed to go to the lower part of the state to hunt next weekend, hoping the weather is good and the toms want to play.
