Ive been used a 20 gauge to kill all of my birds. I use a Primos Tight Wad chocke with Federal #5s. The last bird i killed i rolled over at 40 yards.

Although a truly mentally stable person I am... I can't do what you do!!! NOPE NO SIR!!! I would last less than 3 years before witnessing the revolving door got the better of me and I revert to "Southern Justice!" The system tells us to let the system handle them and vigilantes are bad and wrong then we see and hear the systems "REVOLVING DOOR" It really weighs on my conscience. I know ight from wrong but transgressions against me get less and less address to law enforcement due to their inability to complete their job' both barely qualified employees and the system tying their hands! I take it personal when even you get robbed as the punk is likely to end up anywhere doing the same thing. Brent

We get them, don't you worry. They get what they deserve maybe not soon enough for some but it works out. I have some cases that went for years but we got them. In the end God will sort them out.
Like Swartkoff said about the terroist, its not our job to judge them. That is God's job, we just arange the meeting. See justice will get served, eventually. I work for the FEDs not local or state.

I'd get him a gun that fit him. Whats the recoil from a light weight 20 gun verses a light load twelve gauge a little heavier with the same or bigger payload ? As far as a single shot hammer gun goes...several years ago a fellow mentioned the fact that with a single shot hammer gun if the gun is cocked and not fired the hammer has to be let down..... it's not the safest scenario for a youngster to let the hammer down if he's by himself. What ever gauge I chose I'd go with a gun "without the hammer" with just a safety....either pump or automatic. jOe

Thanks Joe, hey bud I will moving back your way this may. I am from Parsons, TN . If you have not heard of it lets just say if we wanted to go to the movies Jackson< TN was where we went. My brother lives in Savanah, Mom in Parsons, uncles and aunts and cousins all over Henderson County. I will be moving to nashville.
I saw your birds you killed this fall nice, where you hunting at (just curios I got much land to hunt there between my relatives) so we wont be budding in on ya. Also thinks for the tip, I never even thought of that. The one I used had a hammer on it if I recall. Huh. Can you break those open after they are cocked or are they locked and the only way is to shoot. I have to say I have only had one in my life and is was a old one, had a 32 inch barrel on it. Do not remember much else other than it kicked like the dickens.
Thanks for your imput.

Bow, you mentioned that you have other children, so I'd get a mossberg or 870 express that accepts choke tubes. They are a little more expensive than the single, but when the 10 yr old is ready, upgrade him to a 12 ga and hand down the 20 to the next in line. My father got me an Ithaca 37 20ga. with a modified barrel with standard 2-3/4" chamber. I took my first 2 turkeys with it, just had to let them get real close - taught me patience as well. I still use it for grouse & pheasants. i bought myself a second-hand Mossberg 12 ga. and a ported turkey choke and that is what I use to this day. No need for anything fancy, it's the pellets that kill the turkey, not the gun.

well, these are my thoughts, if you get a 20 ga. you may have a gun that wont see much use if ur son changes hi mind about hunting. Id say let him use ur 12 with some 2 3/4'' AA trap loads in size 7 1/2 BECAUSE while many of you may laugh at using trap loads for turkey, if the range is reasonable, the gobbler wont have a head left. reason being:any turkey gun & choke combo worth using will , in theory, throw a VERY tight VERY dense pattern w/ all those bbs and if he likes it,, Then by him is own shotgun just my 2 cents

I think it is great that you are taking your 10 year old out. That is where it all starts, at a young age. Myself, If I had a choice, would have him shoot the 20 ga. even with the modified choke. With some 1220 #6's, there would be plenty of firepower out to 30-35 yards. I would also have him do some shooting with it to get familar with the gun. Throw some clay birds and have him shoot at them with some 71/2s. It's far better to be shooting at a target than just shooting the gun to see how hard it kicks. With a little confidence in shooting the gun, a follow up shot, if needed, would achievable, plus the modified choke will increase the odds somewhat. Just getting out and experiencing the hunt is a whole lot of success right there. Good luck. It wii be alot of fun.
