I should be posting in the hung over section but since it deals with a mount I put it here.
THis is last years mount. One morning about 3AM we heard a crash to see this all over the floor. Scratched the hardwoods and did this damage to the mount. The one shows the broken skull plate and the broken tine. There are about 20 pieces in that ziplock.
The nail is still in the wall drove in a stud and the head is intack. A different mount hung there before with no problem and the hanging plate is still there. JUst can't figure why it fell.
Qeustion is what will it take to repair it? Can it be repaired without a new cape?
Any thoughs appreaciated.

I would call the taxi that did the mount and talk to him. There are different ways of tanning (some use a dry preservative) so it's hard for me to say if the cape can be rehydrated and repaired. I would look it over close to make sure the nose is not broken or a glass eye cracked. As far as the rack goes...a good taxidermist can fix it. If it can not be 'pieced' back together he can make new tines and paint them to match the rest of the rack....pictures of the original rack are very helpful. I have replaced plenty missing tines and charge by the inch....you could have the '30 pointer' if you wanted. As to 'why' it fell...sometimes when hanging a mount the customer will think that they are hooked into the hanger when in reality they have missed the hanger and have hung it under the skin that's folded over the back. Check the back of the mount to see if the skin (above the hanger) is pulled away from the backboard. It might not be very noticable...look close.

Thanks, I'm quit sure it was on the hanger. The only thing I can think of is it might have been sitting on the head of the nail vice over the head and on the actual nail.
Thanks again for the insight.

It don't take much to rehydrate the hide, but it looks like he used no slip. The tines you can keep but most likely he will make new ones with epoxy and stain and paint to match. The hair will make all the seams cover up nice. Don't worry its completley fixable. That is why we always bought the "Noose" for are hangers. We would use them on any game heads even cape buffalo. Tell the taxidermist you would like to have that put on the back.

Well, I gotta report this guy is back in his rightful spot on the wall. I called a local guy who has a great rep and he did one of my bow mounts years back. He did a super repair. Actually glued all the pieces of the tine back together and filled in the cracks. Happy ending. Set me back $125 but IMO well worth it.

I take it you want close ups? I'll try but I will say that head ain't coming off the wall for nothing.
Flying out this afternoon to Pensacola but will try and get some posted when I return.
